SeaDoc Presents: Infections, Inequalities, and the Ocean

Infectious diseases disproportionately hit the economically and socially-disadvantaged people in society, and the current COVID-19 pandemic is no exception. People of color are more likely to die from the virus and poorer people are hardest hit by the subsequent economic hardships.

In this virtual discussion, Dr. Matt Sparke, an expert on this subject from UC Santa Cruz, speaks to this. Many people have also asked us how viruses like COVID-19 could impact marine wildlife populations. Dr. Tracey Goldstein, virologist and world-wide expert from the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine addresses this.

Finally, Dr. Jonna Mazet, Director of the UC Davis One Health Institute, talks about how environmental degradation disproportionately affects the world’s marginalized populations and how the work of SeaDoc and others can be the tide that lifts all boats.

SeaDoc Society Executive Director, Dr. Kirsten Gilardi, introduces the event and discusses SeaDoc’s environmental and social justice work with our Science Director, Joe Gaydos.
